This was excellent, Gabe. What a powerful talk it was that Zachary gave about the trucker convoy. Compassionate, inclusive, noticing details like the cleanliness, talking to the police officers. He was exactly the right person to be attesting to that, and how it didn't need to go so wrong.
And I, of course, admire the hell out of him for his stance on keeping the gym open during the lockdowns. My dance teacher, Gina, had the same commitment to her students. She lived in my garaj mahal at the time and did zoom classes, where we used costumes, props, puppets, and lots of bawdy jokes to keep the spirits up of people who were afraid to come out. It was only a handful of people but she said if it was only one, she'd have still done it because people needed that contact so much.
The rest of us danced in public parks until the joy police kicked us out, in a church that had been shut down, in my backyard, and around a pool in an upscale hippie commune just out of town. Gina used her stimulus check to get a beast of a stairmaster that's still back there. We did circuit training up and down the walkway. Our other friend had an aerial studio that they wouldn't let her run, so we had private lessons with her--that's how I got into it.
Zachary is so right about the energy of being around other people. Living with an exercise fanatic who hated to work out alone put me in the best fitness of my life!
I have utmost respect for those who made the effort to care for others during lockdowns. There were many ways to be part of the solution and I feel like I really missed out by wallowing in despair.
Zach is a huge help and a great friend to take on this mission with, so I'm optimistic about my future potential.
I thoroughly enjoyed this. Not only from a health perspective but from a motivational one too. I loved that you were attracted to the gym and Zach because the Google reviews said he stayed open during covid. Hahaha. I especially enjoyed a simple yet fundamental missive: find out what motivates you! Is it the tiger behind you or the carrot in front of you? Great job, both of you.
And holy jeez, Gabe, you can really tell how much you’ve slimmed in your face. Keep up the hard work!!
