I hope that we are not far from having a hundred Sam's turning the OS industry into communities, perhaps with SAAS and educational elements attached. That would be a great step toward limiting the surveillance network competition.
Fantastic interview. Sounds like a very ambitious and exciting project, one that anyone concerned with digital privacy and basic liberty should be happy about. I can only imagine the amount of work involved. Very much on the same wavelength about the big picture issues and the importance of usability and the often missing human element in proposed technological solutions.
Serenum is awesome to hear about. I can only see this from the bleachers in center field. No fast enough to keep up.

Do not presume that the solution you have in mind will be the solution you will develop.

Words of wisdom. People knock embodiment (I go here because it is the base of bases) saying in various religious and philosophical context that the body is "evil" or "limited" or in some way defective.
Fact is each of us who are embodied are working out a proof of concept. The Laws of the material universe have the final say. We may think we know how to fly. The Earth will be the final judge of ones embodied effort.

Changing the Foundation (hardware)
To me you are leaving out the ultimate foundation. Sustenance via direct relationship with the Earth. Sadly most folks are caught in CAFOs for humans (Confined Animal Feeding Operatons).
Wanting to build your own hardware base is awesome. It would be awesome if Fab facilities would be open and free (to use. Not hindered by financial censorship customs). Consider Tesla. If your project were to affect the capital flow of the existing system. You my find those who can will through up insurmountable barriers. But for now you are off the radar.
One should look at the history of how hardware has come to be owned by a few, controlled by a few and made profitable by soaking the masses. This kind of ownership (state or private) began in earnest with the Industrial Revolution.

When you talk about Certificate authorities etc. and new forms of the Inet that allow the possibility of real security, and you mention the de-volving of the Inet. It reminds me of several biological systems that arose over time.
It is difficult to mess with DNA in a living organism. One of the reasons for this level of difficulty is to prevent hijacking of the living functioning system.
Various languages arose from the desire to have ones' clan secure internal communication that other clans would not be privy to. Thus various language systems arose around the world prior to the dawn of history.
For me rethinking all this (I do that too but more at an anthropological level for lack of a better word) is to understand why do humans behave the way we do?
Bacteria don't. They Terraformed Earth. They are truly free and open with knowledge/skills and share all the time, plus the biosphere we all live in is their library. Humans seem to be proprietary in their day to day life. Why? To me it is the "protection racket" that makes it so, which is sad really.
Might we not learn from bacteria. These guys are both hardware and software magicians. Dr. Lynn Margulis is certainly a great way to get familiar with these amazing beings who she regarded as far smarter that humans.
Thanks for this amazing discussion and work done on Serenum
I learned HP RPN a flavor of FORTH. Anyway for what it is worth.

Amen to that!
